Bishop’s story begins with a personality you can’t miss — and a journey his family didn’t expect. When Bishop was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, his parents knew the road ahead wouldn’t be easy. But they also knew one thing — they would do everything possible to give him the best life they could. After exploring options across the country, they chose St. Louis Children’s Hospital and its nationally recognized SDR program — traveling from Louisiana to stay in St. Louis for the surgery and recovery. With the support of an expert care team at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Bishop is gaining strength, mobility and confidence every day. Because every child deserves the chance to move forward.
The Cure Within: a first in the treatment of sickle cell disease
Martin Mwita was born with sickle cell disease and doctors said he likely wouldn’t live past age 35. But Mwita received a chance to live without the excruciating pain that has dominated his young life. WashU Medicine and St. Louis Children’s Hospital are the first in the Midwest — and among only a few academic centers in the U.S. — to begin offering a newly approved gene therapy to cure sickle cell disease.
